Understanding the Zodiac: Pisces

The Sun moves into Pisces on Feb 18/19

In our journey toward an ever-expanding sense of self, Pisces brings us to knowing a oneness with all that is, that we are part and parcel of God. However, because our ego has been unaware of any direct experience of our divine connection, we have struggled through various substitutes, from religious martyrdom to addiction.

Pisces’ spiritual intention is to give us conscious access to our divine wholeness in infinite, eternal and unconditional love. We learn to be nonjudgmental and compassionate. We free our minds with meditation and self-reflection. We let go of any need to “fix” the world, and surrender our anxiety to a “higher power” and a divine plan. Our ego learns to relax totally, sometimes seeming non-existent. We feel at peace, not by denying worldly reality, but by incorporating divine reality.

Pisces is ruled by planet Neptune. Pisces is the "end" of the zodiac progression of signs, and marks the culmination of the involvement of human awareness back to spiritual wholeness. Neptune is that part in each of us that is able to experience our oneness with all that is. When we are able to feel connection and compassion for others, for humanity as a whole, even for other species, and for ourselves, we draw from our "spiritual heart" which Neptune represents. The energy of Pisces entices us to live from that greater heart as a way of life.

This hasn't been easy for humans to do. In the illusion of separateness that this physical world presents to our limited five senses, we have tended to live in fear of others, afraid that death is the end of all we hold dear. Religions have given us hope for more and at times have been instrumental in "awakening" some individuals to actually experience more. However, in the end, religion can only be a set of beliefs and practices that at best point the way (more of a Sagittarius/Jupiter affect) and at worst, detract from and block the way.

Though unseen by humans until modern times, Neptune has always been at play in our inner worlds. For lack of experience in how to activate our inner Neptune in a healthy way, we humans have made distorted attempts. Drugs, alcohol, cults, martyrdom, and other means have been used for ages to imitate the expanded heart feelings we have when in our genuine mystical connection to others. On the other hand, substance-abuse and other means of escapism have been used to shut down the pain we have felt when our greater hearts have actually begun to connect compassionately to the collective pain body of humanity while still unable to develop and sustain the vital force of light and love available to us through true alignment with our soul. It's the artists and mystics of the world who have historically found higher ground in this journey.

It was when the planet Neptune was first discovered by scientists in 1849 that humans first began in large numbers to claim freedom from religious authority and declare the rights of individuals to discover their own path toward "God," toward spiritual enlightenment. What were before only secrets and occult schools of mystical wisdom, now became popular movements in our societies, allowing thousands, for the first time in history to be able to say, "I am spiritual, but not religious," without being killed or banished by society.

Now, in current times, there is a mass spiritual awakening across the globe as humankind confronts the crises of collective survival that naturally evolved from living in the illusion of separateness. It is Pisces that calls to our inner Neptunes to feel past the fears, remember we are all eternal love spirit, and live our lives with bold and loving affirmation for creating the beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

 Good Pisces activities in March

To align your energy with Pisces, spend some extra time alone. Meditate. Make or listen to music that opens your heart to feeling your divine connection. Pray. Invoke gratitude as often as you can remember. Forgive yourself and others as much as possible. As you greet others, those familiar and strangers, engage their eyes deeply and acknowledge them as fellow souls before addressing them as personalities. As you hear of world events, hold a prayer of forgiveness and peace for all parties. Contrary to any resistance from your logical mind, affirm a vision for the more beautiful world you know, in your heart, is possible. Know you are love, we are love, and all is perfect.

Good Pisces questions to ask yourself in March

To heal and evolve your Pisces self, give attention to your spiritual awareness. Do you blame outside yourself? Do you feel alienated from God? Do you get confused around other people’s feelings? Can you feel compassion without needing to rescue? Do you trust the flow of life? Can you feel your divine connection to others, beyond just a concept? Do you meditate and spend time alone in self-reflection?

Horoscope for February 19 to March 20

While the Sun is in the sign of Pisces, our ego subliminally longs to reunite with our soul’s connection to the divine love of all-that-is. Such mystical awareness has always been the main goal and challenge of human existence, so of course we are still easily confused by such longings. These inner intuitive promptings and sensitivities are typically misunderstood, resulting in illusions, delusions, fears, suffering and addictions. The spiritual path has always resulted in an inward turn, to discover our true source of being. We invoke devotional practices to increase the flow of our soul through our personality expression. While this attention to inner awareness increases the longing for wholeness and spiritual unity, it also challenges us to experience and discern the ways in which our ego continues to create the illusions of fracture and separation.

Look below for your birth sign (sun sign) to see what particular challenges/opportunities are being brought to your awareness this month. (These can also hold true if you have your Moon, Rising sign or a number of planets in the sign.)

Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 19):

The energy of Aries seems a direct contradiction to that of Pisces, since Aries is all about strengthening and asserting the individual human ego. Thus, the Aries experience with devotion to soul can feel somewhat disabling, prompting episodes of guilt, shame or fear of being weakened or lost. The key is to find your own way to practice, free of conformity, yet allowing you to express the compassion and acceptance that reflects your true, larger identity.

Taurus (Apr 20 – May 20):

Your need for stability and material security colors your approach to the inner, devotional life. A need for fixed values and solid outcomes can become dogmatic beliefs that block your willingness to step into the amorphous waters of inner exploration. Your easiest access is through your body and with nature. Yoga, gardening, creative craftsmanship and such can keep you grounded, yet allow your awareness to grow beyond the illusion of the physical and become comfortable with the unknown. Once you find what works for you, devotion comes naturally.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20):

Inner awareness requires stilling the mind. For a Gemini, this can sound like death. After all, what’s the point of sitting still and meditating if not to find out what’s in there, right? Certainly, asking questions and trying to understand is a part of your spiritual path, but at some point, you must let go of the need to feed your curiosity and process ideas and instead merely “be” with what is. If you can give your mind the understanding that it is not who you really are, you will transcend thought and allow profound intuitive “knowings” to soak in.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22):

Cancer and Pisces are both water signs, meaning their energies are very much that of emotions and feelings. For Cancer, the emphasis is on the personal emotions that demand the care and nurturing that builds emotional security for your ego. For Pisces, it’s more about the deeper feelings that emerge from your longing for the divine. The challenge is to discern the difference. If still struggling to build a strong emotional security as an individual, the influence of Pisces can be very confusing, causing you to feel other peoples’ pain as your own and directing your spiritual longings into martyrdom. The key is to hold compassion, but not rescue. Model self-nurturance.

 Leo (July 23 - Aug 22):

Leo’s gift, when done well, is the ability to shine the light of the soul through the ego/personality in ways that cause others to feel the warmth of that divine light. To pull this off, you must allow the ego a lot of rope, which is precisely the challenge you face in the realm of inner spiritual devotion. Leos can find themselves in episodes of shame when they overextended the ego and lose soul consciousness, usually because they’ve attracted so much attention in the process. The devotional practice, Leo, is to exercise Piscean forgiveness and compassion for yourself, and use your expressive talents to model a healthy humility that encourages others to shine, too.

 Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22):

Virgos, when motivated, can become the most devoted of spiritual mystics. Virgos like to know how it all works and then do it right. Creating new habits and routines, a powerful requirement for true spiritual growth, comes naturally to you. The trouble is that you can then get so caught up in the mechanics of devotion; you miss the spirit of it. Self-judgment and criticism of others can stand in the way of the very divine connectedness you desire to experience. Your challenge is to see that perfection is always present on a divine level. Once you get that, you become the model.

 Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22):

Libras are all about connecting to others, valuing close relationships. They can spend their lives mastering the art of serving others well and thereby balance out their own ego’s natural selfishness. This turn from self to other is a natural bend in the circle of spiritual growth we all travel. However, the ultimate completion of that circle in Pisces is about coming back to the self again, but now the higher self of the soul, which actually includes everyone else’s soul. So, Libra, the challenge for you for inner devotion is to not confuse the need for a strong human partnership with the need for a strong partnership with your own soul. Such soul awareness blesses any relationship a Libra may have.

 Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21):

As another water sign, Scorpio, your challenge in spiritual devotion is the fear of being exposed. With such sensitivities to the feelings of others around you, it can be a confusing mess inside. The Scorpio experience involves the unwinding of the ego and facing the monstrous illusions of darkness and horror that require a transcendent experience beyond the ego. Thus, facing your inner world, you will find many shadows and scary places, but you also tend to have strong desires to explore such realms, so it can work for you.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21):

The Sagittarius path of truth-seeking seems to naturally point you toward mystical fulfillment of Pisces, however, it isn’t quite that simple. Sag’s can get very stuck in the mental realms of spiritual beliefs, theologies and doctrines. This prevents them from entering the interior worlds of direct divine experience unless at some point you stop asking questions and taking dogmatic stances and instead understand that scriptures and teachings are there to point the way, not BE the way. Once learned, you can be a gifted teacher of devotional understanding.

 Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 19):

Capricorns block to inner spiritual awareness is the need to achieve and be recognized. You are so accustomed to setting goals, making plans and then getting things done, that the nonlinear nature and non-predictable timing of spiritual growth can frustrate you. Also, you can find yourself striving to take leadership in spiritual circles when what you might truly need is to either follow or just “be." You’ll do best when you have a disciplined and routine practice of devotions in which you can let go of all your worldly aspirations.

 Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 18):

Aquarians are naturally drawn to environments and groups that exist outside the norms of society. This can give you a leg up on moving toward a spiritual lifestyle. However, your tendency to live in your head, not in your heart, can keep you aloof from the more heart-felt levels of connections that you need to incorporate into your wholeness. Though Aquarians might be drawn to spiritual groups easily enough, you might also feel rebellious and miss the opportunities to surrender to the group unity that reflects the wholeness of your own soul.  Finding the right group is key.

 Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20):

One might assume that a Pisces person would be most likely to fulfill a spiritual mystic life, but there are many complications to the Pisces ego that do not necessarily align with the highest intentions of the Pisces calling. Though you are very sensitive to the feelings of those around you and to the deep longing within you for the divine, you can also feel crushed by the weight of that awareness. Addictions and escapisms can turn into years and decades of avoidance of the very feelings that are required to step into the conscious path of mystical awakening. You need to learn to stay grounded and present in your body and seek experienced help in discerning the confusing perceptions you experience inside.
