sahasrara, the crown chakra

The Chakras are an ideal roadmap for personal growth and development. In 2017 we are journeying through the Chakras and focusing on one Chakra a month. August brings us to the Crown Chakra, the center of spirituality, enlightenment, transcendence, oneness, awakening, and understanding. This month, the Crown Chakra asks you to explore your connection to all the dimensions around you — the spiritual world as well as the earth plane. Are you connected to the divine, humanity, and your higher self? Or do you feel alone in the universe, disconnected from the source and your soul?

Brief Overview of Chakras: The Chakras are the main energy centers in our subtle body. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura or electromagnetic field. There are main Chakras, minor, subpersonal, and transpersonal Chakras. The Chakras’ function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. Each chakra is associated with certain physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual interactions. Each chakra has personal growth themes, functions, and purposes. The concept of the Chakras has been around for thousands of years.

The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head. Its functions and purposes include spiritual connection, enlightenment, transcendence, awakening, serenity, beliefs, morals, understanding, thought, awareness, knowledge, wisdom, universal intelligence, pure consciousness, karma, grace, and bliss. It is humanity’s connection to the universe and that, which is beyond death. In Sanskrit, Sahasrara means “thousand petaled,” because this chakra is said to be in the form of a lotus with 1,000 petals arranged in 20 layers and resides in the “plane of truth and reality.” There are over a thousand names for God, yet it remains nameless and formless. The lessons and goal of the Crown Chakra is to guide us into developing our spirituality, achieving enlightenment, and understanding the secrets of the universe as well as the bigger picture in our own lives. Crown Chakra needs that must be met for transformation and transcendence to occur include having a spiritual connection, faith, and oneness with all.

August 2017 Crown Chakra Forecast: As the center of oneness, the Crown Chakra asks for an honest inventory of your spiritual life and connection to the world around you. Are you fulfilled with your human relationships? Or is something missing? Do you believe in something greater than yourself? Do you have a strong relationship with the universe/God/Mother Earth/The Divine? Can you connect to the divine? How? Do you feel connected with your higher self? Is the divine a relationship you nourish or allow to sit on the backburner? Are you too busy in your life to make room for what is really important? This month, it’s time for your mind to step out of the way of your soul…..

Crown Chakra Aromatherapy Blend

  • 3 drops Frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops Myrrh essential oil
  • 4 drops Spikenard essential oil
  • 3 drops Palo Santo essential oil
  • 2 drops Angelica essential oil

The above blend is meant for a diffuser. Place the drops into the diffuser and as you turn on, deeply inhale the aroma and breathe it out through your crown chakra at the top of the head. Visualize your crown chakra beaming up to the heavens. As you do this, state the following affirmations: “I am integrated, whole, complete and one with the divine energy. I am connected to the source, guides, guardians, and my angels.”

July’s Chakra Reading & Aromatherapy Recipe

Posted on
Category: Aromatherapy Recipes

The Chakras are an ideal roadmap for personal growth and development.  In 2017 we are journeying through the Chakras and focusing on one Chakra a month. July brings us to the Third Eye Chakra, the center of insight, vision, and intuition. I firmly believe that intuition is not a “gift” only some are lucky enough to have. I believe intuition is an innate ability we all have. Some of us are just too busy sleepwalking through life to notice messages from the divine. This month, the Third Chakra asks you to tune inward…. Do you believe in intuition? Do you honor and listen to your intuition? Do you trust your intuition?

Brief Overview of Chakras: The Chakras are the main energy centers in our subtle body. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura or electromagnetic field. There are main Chakras, minor, subpersonal, and transpersonal Chakras. The Chakras’ function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. Each chakra is associated with certain physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual interactions. Each chakra has personal growth themes, functions, and purposes.  The concept of the Chakras has been around for thousands of years.

The Third Eye Chakra is located in the pineal gland, center of the forehead/brow area, and back of the head. It functions and purpose include clarity, seeing, intuition, insight, goals, dreams, aspirations, imagination, dreaming, visualization, inner sight, inner guidance, intelligence, self-realization, seeing your life clearly, and seeing the bigger picture. Its Sanskrit name is Ajna, which means “perception, knowledge, authority, and command.” Ajna honors the psychic within each of us. The lessons and goal of the Third Eye is to guide us into trusting our intuition and inner knowing. Third Eye Chakra needs that must be met for transformation and transcendence to occur include: the ability to dream and have goals and aspirations, realizing your personal potential, ability to see the whole picture and have insight, ability to find meaning, personal growth and peak experiences, self-actualization and self-fulfillment.

July 2017 Third Eye Chakra Forecast: Many think that all intuitive abilities are associated with the Third Eye; when in fact, each Chakra has an intuitive ability. The Chakras act as antennas that receive and interpret energy from the other realms. From clairsentience, to clairempathy, to claircognizance, we all pick up the subtle messages from the universe in a unique way and tend to have an intuitive ability that is more dominant than the others. There are many different ways to read and sense energy. Some feel, some know, some hear, some see, some taste, some smell. The key is learning to identify how you connect to the divine and then nurturing that ability by using it, strengthening it, and developing it. Sure everyone wants to be clairvoyant (see energy and see the spirit world), but that might not be the way you are psychic. This month, go inward in meditation and contemplation. Sit in silence. Be still. Be aware of all that is around you. How do YOU connect and communicate with the divine?

Third Eye Chakra Aromatherapy Blend

  • 1 drop Tulsi (Holy Basil) essential oil
  • 2 drops Clary Sage essential oil
  • 3 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 4 drops Sandalwood essential oil
  • 1/2 ounce of a vegetable oil like coconut, jojoba, grapeseed or almond

Blend the essential oils into the vegetable oil then anoint your third eye. As you do this, repeat the following affirmations: “My inner vision is clear and strong. I see all things in clarity. I trust my intuition and inner vision and always understand the true meaning of life situations.”

The throat chakra is the center of communication and self-expression.

The Chakras are an ideal roadmap for personal growth and development.  In 2017 we are journeying through the Chakras and focusing on one Chakra a month. June brings us to the Throat Chakra, the center of communication and self-expression. This month, the Throat Chakra asks you to examine the story of your life; are you the author creating your own story, or do you let others write your story for you? Are you the main character in your life story or are you just secondary? Is your life story truthful or a work of fiction? Do you speak the truth to yourself and others?

Brief Overview of Chakras: The Chakras are the main energy centers in our subtle body. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura or electromagnetic field. There are main Chakras, minor, subpersonal, and transpersonal Chakras. The Chakras’ function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. Each chakra is associated with certain physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual interactions. Each chakra has personal growth themes, functions, and purposes.  The concept of the Chakras has been around for thousands of years.

The Throat Chakra is located in the throat and neck. It is the center of communication, expression, and where we experience the world non-verbally through vibration, sound, symbols, myths, and archetypes. The Throat Chakra teaches us lessons about self-expression. The Sanskrit name is Vishudda, which means “the pure place” or “especially pure.” So naturally, we must ask ourselves: Is my communication pure? Am I true to my word? Do I express myself both verbally and non-verbally with truth and clarity? Some Throat Chakra needs that must be met for healing and transcendence to occur include the ability to express one’s self non-verbally (through body language, music, art, etc), healthy verbal communication, and an appreciation for art and beauty.

June 2017 Throat Chakra Forecast: The Throat Chakra is the gateway for truth and communication. Stories are stored in the subconsciousness and told through the Throat Chakra. The Throat Chakra is where we access the archetypes, myths, and symbols that help give our life meaning, purpose, and guide our character traits and personalities. We are the storytellers of our life. It’s time to evaluate and critique your life story. Are you the author creating your own story, or do you let others write your story for you? Are you the main character in your life story or are you just secondary? Is your awareness, energy, and attention always on someone or something else? Is your life story truthful or a work of fiction? Do you speak the truth to yourself and others? What’s the biggest lie you have told yourself about your life and why it is where it is now? As the storyteller, you alone have the power to edit, rewrite, and modify things in your life that are no longer working for you. You are powerful over your situation.

Throat Chakra Blend

  • 3 drops German (Blue) chamomile
  • 4 drops Rosemary essential oil
  • 5 drops Sage essential oil
  • 1 ounce of a vegetable oil like coconut, jojoba, or almond

Blend the essential oils into the vegetable oil then massage some over the throat and neck area. As you do this, repeat the following affirmations: “My thoughts are positive and I always express myself both verbally and non-verbally with truth and clarity. I am the storyteller of my life and have power over each and every situation.” Seal your intent by participating in a throat chakra activity such as singing, chanting, or listening to music.

aromatherapy and the higher heart chakra

Posted on
Category: Aromatherapy Recipes

The Chakras are an ideal roadmap for personal growth and development. In 2017 we are journeying through the Chakras and focusing on one Chakra a month. May brings us to the Higher Heart Chakra, the ‘Healers Chakra’ and the center of charity, volunteerism, humanitarianism. This month, the Higher Heart asks you, “How are you a light in the darkness so that others can find their way?”

The Higher Heart Chakra is a newer emerging chakra. Not a traditional “yoga” chakra. It is located between the Heart and Throat chakras on the Thymus. This energy center was gifted to us at the beginning of time, but lie dormant until recently. It is here to help us integrate and process the new energies coming to the earth. It is activated in those who have reincarnated at this to help heal humanity and help us move into the Age of Aquarius, the 5th dimension, a time of peace and harmony. Not many people teach about this Chakra. I feel as if part of my life mission is to share that there are many more than just 7 chakras! The Chakra and energy system has been evolving as humans and the energies on earth have been changing. We are waking up and becoming multidimensional! I consider the Higher Heart a main Chakra. It reflects a person’s understanding, acceptance and practice of the universal concepts of Universal Love and Compassion. Activated in Healers, as it shows a person’s ability and/or calling to healing/teaching work. Its functions’ include unconditional love for all of humanity, healing the world around you, increasing the vibration of humanity, practicing the lessons of the heart, serving, donating, volunteering, giving back to your community in some way, generosity, altruism, and humanitarian work. Those with an activated Higher Heart feel that they are here for some greater purpose and that they can influence the world by their actions.

May 2017 Higher Heart Chakra Forecast: Its very appropriate that the Higher Heart is the Chakra of focus for May. I have been pondering lately why people volunteer. Currently, I am involved in more volunteer and charity projects than I ever have been in my life. In fact, I am volunteering almost as much as I am working for pay. Some of the volunteer projects I am involved in were quite difficult to get accepted for and are considered “prestigious”. So, I have been thinking about why people volunteer and donate their money and time? So I did a little research and talked to others heavily involved in charity work. People report volunteering because 1) causes are close to their heart, 2) to make a positive change in their community, 3) to make the world a better place, 4) to build up their resumes, 5) to learn a new skill, 6) For the unique opportunity and benefits/perks, 7) because they feel called to, 8) To pay it forward, 9) For self-reflection and self-awareness, and 10) To boost their mental, physical, and spiritual health. Serving your community is a function of the Higher Heart. Many people have only the chakras below the heart activated and therefore their whole life-experience is based in the consciousness of ego, fear, and survival. The Heart and Higher Heart Chakras are leading to a consciousness based in love and community and therefore to a life in abundance, peace, joy, and satisfaction. By volunteering and donating you can help shift your consciousness to a higher level. As you heal and raise your vibration you help heal all of humanity and raise both the vibration and consciousness on the planet. So this month, the higher energies are asking you to explore how you serve humanity. If you currently don’t volunteer, donate your time or money, or do some sort of service/humanitarianism, WHY NOT?? Most people think when we talk about “healing” humanity we are referring to setting up a healing business like yoga, massage, Reiki, etc. We can heal the world in a lot of different ways. The world and humanity need a lot of help right now. How can you assist?

Higher Heart Chakra Blend:
~ 6 drops Rosewood (or Ho Wood)
~ 2 drops Thyme
~ 2 drops Tea Tree
~ 2 drops Hyssop
~ 1 ounce of a vegetable oil like coconut, jojoba, or almond

Blend the essential oils into the vegetable oil then massage some over the Higher Heart area. Lightly thump the Higher Heart area three times and repeat the following affirmations: “I am experiencing a higher calling now. I help heal humanity now. I help heal the world now.”

April Heart Chakra Reading

The Chakras are an ideal roadmap for personal growth and development.  In 2017 we are focusing on one Chakra a month. April brings us to the Heart Chakra, the center of unconditional love, forgiveness, hope, and peace. This month, I ask you to identify who or what keeps you chained to the past and does not allow you to move forward with your life….

The Heart Chakra is located in the center of your chest. Its functions include love, self-love, balance, compassion, empathy, peace, respect, non-judgment, acceptance, connection, affinity, high vibrating emotions, and equilibrium. Love, hope, forgiveness, and compassion are the life lessons we learn through the Heart Chakra. The Sanskrit name for the Heart chakra is ‘Anahata’ which means “unhurt, unstruck, and unbeaten.” Heart Chakra needs that must be met for healing and transcendence to occur include self-love, the ability to love others, ability to feel compassion and empathy for others, sense of peace, and hope.

April 2017 Heart Chakra Forecast: The Heart Chakra embodies high vibrating emotions like peace, gratitude, and joy. Many times unresolved issues and energy stuck in our past can contribute to the development of lower vibrating emotions like guilt, shame, and depression. This month, the universe is encouraging you to release your past and set yourself free. By constantly revisiting the past, living there, ruminating over it, thinking thoughts like ‘would have, could have, should have,’ and leaving it unhealed, we remain prisoners.  How can you embody and become Anahata (unhurt, unstruck, and unbeaten) and release what no longer serves you a higher purpose?

Heart Chakra Forgiveness and Release Blend

  • 3 drops Palo Santo essential oil
  • 5 drops Bergamot essential oil
  • 2 drops Rose essential oil
  • 5 drops Myrrh essential oil

Directions: This blend is to be used in a diffuser. As you prepare the blend, have the thoughts and intent that you are ready to release patterns and energy from your past to set your soul free. Turn the diffuser on and breathe in the aroma and state the following affirmation. “Bless my heart, bless my mind, bless my soul. Whatever doesn’t serve me I release and let go.”

Solar Plexus Aromatherapy Recipe

Posted on
Category: Aromatherapy Recipes

The Chakras are an ideal roadmap for personal growth and development. In 2017 we are focusing on one Chakra a month. March brings us to the Solar Plexus Chakra, the seat of personal power, autonomy, and dynamic energy. This month, I ask you to focus on who or what you give your energy away to or who takes your energy away from you….

The Solar Plexus Chakra is located in the center of your body, in the area of your diaphragm. It is the seat of Personal Power, Will, Determination, Motivation, Vital Energy, Self-Esteem/Image, Personality, Ego, Personal Transformation, and Achievement. It represents the element fire and is associated with the Sun and the planet Mars. The Solar Plexus is where our warrior energy is located; where we fight for what’s right, true, and just. The Solar Plexus is your own little personal sunshine. This is where you learn to create boundaries for yourself; physical, emotional, and energetic boundaries. You learn to say no, be assertive, and stand up for yourself. You learn where you end and where others begin. You learn not to take on other’s problems. This is where you learn to be an individual, to be free, and to self-regulate.

March 2017 Solar Plexus Forecast: Have you been more drained, depleted, tired, fatigued, stressed, and irritable than usual? Have you been experiencing more anxiety, headaches or stomachaches? All these can be symptoms of a malfunctioning Solar Plexus. And unfortunately, many times this can happen because we allow it to happen by having poor boundaries. The center of your personal power and autonomy can go haywire because other people’s energy may be invading your energy field or because you have given your energy away to others. We never want to give our energy away and we never want to take on others’ energy. Take a moment and close your eyes, tuning into the energy that runs through you and around you. Does it feel like someone else’s energy is there? Have you allowed another to take your energy from you? No one can take your energy from you unless you allow it. So contemplate, meditate, and focus on who or what you give your energy away to or who takes your energy away from you. Why do you allow this to happen? This month, the universe is encouraging you to take your power back.

Solar Plexus Chakra Energy Cleansing Blend:
~ 5 drops Sage essential oil
~ 5 drops Grapefruit essential oil
~ 5 drops Juniper essential oil
~ 5 drops Lemon essential oil
~ 1 tablespoon vodka or witch hazel
~ 2-ounce spray bottle
~ Distilled water

Directions: Place the vodka or witch hazel in the spray bottle (this acts as a dispersant since water and oils do not mix). Add the essential oils then the gently swirl to blend together. Add the distilled water. Shake well. Use the spray to cleanse your energy field, aura, and space. As you spray the blend, have the intent that you are cleansing away negative, dense, dark energy and redirecting the energies to the divine to be transformed into more useful energy. If you are an energy or Reiki practitioner, you can infuse the bottle with high vibrating energy before you use it.

Sacral Chakra Aromatherapy Reading for February

The chakras are an idea roadmap for personal growth and development. In 2017 we are focusing on one chakra a month. February brings us to the sacral chakra. In the month of February, the collective consciousness focuses on relationships, particularly those of the intimate kind. We celebrate romance this month with St. Valentine’s Day. So this is a great month to focus on sacral chakra energy and how it influences your life.

Brief Overview of Chakras: The chakras ore the main energy centers in our subtle body. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura or electromagnetic field. There are main chakras, minor, subpersonal and transpersonal chakras. The chakras’ function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. Each chakra is associated with certain physical, mental, emotional and spiritual interactions. Each chakra has personal growth themes, functions and purposes. The concept of the chakras has been around for thousands of years.

The Sacral Chakra: The sacral chakra governs relationships and feelings. It is located a few inches below the belly button in the area of the reproductive organs (testes, ovaries) and lower back. Its themes include sexuality, sensuality, passion, pleasure, joy, hobbies (activities that you enjoy), feelings, gratification, family, friends and your tribe. It represents the element water and is associated with the planet Venus. The personal growth lessons of the sacral chakra revolve around developing a sense of belongingness.

February 2017 Sacral Chakra Forecast: Focus on relationships with your significant other, children, and parents this month. Be especially aware of anger, resentment, and short fuses with these individuals. Anger is based in fear and frustration. To bring balance to this chakra and subsequently your relationships, you need to identify the root of your anger in these relationships. What makes you angry? Why do you feel angry? Why are you holding on to this? What can you do about the situation? What part do you play? Do not let anger and frustration control you. Life is too short to be angry, especially with those you care most about. Face your anger, fear and frustrations in your relationships, do what you can to change it, or let it go. You may then find yourself looking at your relationships in a whole new way.

Sacral Chakra Aromatherapy Recipe

1 drop Vanilla
2 drops Cardamom
1 drop Rose
2 drops Orange

Put the drops of essential oil on a cotton pad or tissue or in a diffuser. Breathe in and state the following affirmation: “I am a sexual and sensual being. My life is full of passion and pleasure. I have healthy and rewarding relationships.” Repeat as needed.

Everything you need to know to get started with essential oils

Posted on
Category: Aromatherapy

Introduction: Aromatherapy is a form of complementary medicine based on the therapeutic use of herbs — a practice that combines ancient roots with the fruits of modern research. The principal tool of aromatherapy is essential oils. These are not really “oils” at all, but rather highly concentrated plant essences distilled to maximize aromatic properties. Hundreds of pounds of plant material may go into a small bottle of essential oil.

While they are a natural product, these oils are very concentrated, and we need to take care when using them. This handout should give you all the information you need to use essential oils safely and effectively for yourself and your family in everyday use. If you use these oils as part of a professional practice — for example, as a massage practitioner or counsellor — please consider pursuing certification, if you have not already done so.

Safety notes: We would like to emphasize three important rules for using essential oils safely:

  1. Never use essential oils directly on the skin. Always dilute them with a carrier oil.
  2. Never use essential oils internally unless under the direction of a medical professional.
  3. Extra precautions need to be taken when using the oils with people who have certain medical conditions, pregnant or nursing women, and infants and young children.

Using the oils with a diffuser: A diffuser is a safe and effective tool designed for use with essential oils. It’s a quick way to distribute scent throughout your environment, which can be enjoyed by more than one person at a time. Following is a run-down of various types of diffusers and other delivery mechanisms. You don’t need to keep the diffuser running for a long period of time; ten minutes at a time is plenty.

Nebulizing diffusers and cold air mist diffusers: These high-end diffusers are the best choices for therapeutic use of oils. They’re somewhat expensive, but do the best job because they distribute scent throughout your space efficiently and without heating the oil. Heat can burn off some of the chemical constituents of the oil.

Mechanical diffusers come in many styles. The inexpensive ones we sell at Mimosa use electricity to heat up a small patch of felt, which you sprinkle with oil before turning the machine on. These little machines can distribute scent throughout a single room for a few hours, and are safe to leave on overnight. To conserve the felt patches, you can designate one for each oil you use, and keep it in a marked plastic baggie. Diffusers use heat to release scent into the air.

An oil burner uses a small candle (tealight) as its heat source. The candle heats an attached dish, in which a few drops of oil are diluted in water. When using a burner, it’s very important to make sure to add water to the dish as the contents evaporate; if the candle is left burning beneath a dry dish, the glass dish can crack. Also, as with any open flame, you should never leave the burner unattended while its candle is lit. Oil burners are great for scenting one room for a short time while, but a tealight can only burn for a few hours. When you leave the room, it’s fine to snuff the candle and relight it later. These are great for scenting a room, but are not the first choice for therapeutic use of oils.

Essential Oil Mists: In these, essential oils are diluted in water and sprayed into the air. While this is not a long-lasting way to use the oils, it’s a great way to purify your environment, or to blend several oils for a specific intention. We sell ready-mixed sprays at Mimosa which are formulated for particular intentions, and also as smudging and yoga mat cleansing sprays.

You can also make your own mists by diluting essential oils in water in a small mister bottle. Mimosa’s recipe consists of about 10-15 drops of essential oil, mixed into an ounce of water with a tablespoon of vodka as a preservative for the water.

If you live somewhere where you can’t burn sage or incense, or someone in the household is sensitive to smoke, this can be a great way to purify your home environment. Sprays are also great for the office, when you don’t want anyone to know what you’re up to!

Nasal Inhalers: These are small tools you can carry along when you want to take a little oil along with you, or for personal use. Despite the name, you should never insert the inhaler into your nostril; instead, use it under the nose.

Pendants: An essential oil pendant contains a small piece of cloth which you soak with essential oil before wearing. This is a great way to carry the scent with you. You can also put a little oil (preferably diluted) in a small bottle to carry or wear on a cord.

Other Fun and Safe Ways to Use Essential Oils:

  • Put a few drops into the bathtub.
  • Add a few drops into natural cleaning products. Grapefruit oil is great for this!
  • Add a few drops to unscented soap, lotion or hand cream. Be sure to mix thoroughly before applying to skin.
  • Soak a little oil into a piece of felt, and use it to scent a drawer or closet.
  • Use small amounts for candle-making or other crafts. (It’s fun to be creative — this year I misted my Christmas cards with a little peppermint!)
However you use essential oils, remember, “Less is best.” A tiny bit of these concentrated oils goes a very long way.

Using Essential Oils on Skin:
When using an essential oil on your body, you should first combine it with a carrier oil. Not only does promote safety and give better skin coverage, it actually helps the skin to absorb the essential oil. Thus carrier oils increase safety, effectiveness, and economy of use.

Many common oils make excellent carriers — from kitchen oils, such as olive, sunflower or grapeseed oil to the sweet almond oil often sold for this purpose. A good ratio for adults is about 15 to 30 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil. An ounce is an amount roughly equivalent to the size of a shot glass. (If you’re too young to know how big that is, you should be doing this under adult supervision anyway!) Test your blend on a small patch of skin, to test for sensitivity, before trying it on a larger area.

We need to dilute the oils more when using them with children; see the separate section below for more information.

Once you have blended your essential oil and the carrier oil, they can be stored in an amber glass bottle in the refrigerator for up to six months, and used as massage oil or personal scent. Essential oils can also be blended at this same approximate ratio into unscented soaps, lotions, etc. However, they should never be used in any product that will come in direct contact with the eyes.

Undiluted essential oils should never be used directly on the skin. There are several reasons for this:

  • Some undiluted essential oils can burn the skin, causing contact dermatitis, accelerating sunburn, and/or causing more serious reactions.
  • Undiluted essential oils can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
  • They can be drying to the skin.
  • Placing undiluted essential oils directly on the skin is simply not an effective way to use them, since they will evaporate quite rapidly.
  • Essential oils can interact with medications, herbs, and homeopathics

Using oils internally: We do not recommend using any essential oil internally without the guidance of a medical professional. Without proper guidance, even essences derived from food plants are not safe. There are many reasons for this:

  • Highly concentrated plant essences may burn the mouth, throat or other parts of the digestive system.
  • They present a high risk of overdose.
  • Internal use of oils can cause nausea, vomiting, and/or liver damage.
  • Ingestion is not an effective way to use the oils. Food can interfere with absorption, and digestive chemicals can break down the oils before they have a chance to do any good.

Storing essential oils: Essential oils should be stored in tightly sealed containers, away from sunlight and heat. If possible keep them in the refrigerator. It’s best to use dark-colored glass containers to store oils or anything you make from them, to protect the contents from light. When stored properly, essential oils can retain their potency for up to five years. (Exceptions are citruses and tea tree, which should be used within two years.) As long as the oil still smells strong, it should be fine to use.

Using aromatherapy with infants and children: Essential oils can help children under age twelve in many ways, but we must take care when using them. All essential oils and mixtures made from them should be kept out of reach of small children, and used only with adult supervision.

It’s generally safe to use a diffuser in a room when children are present, as long as the diffuser is out of their reach and the smell doesn’t bother them. Obviously, we need to take special care when using tealights or scented candles.

For topical use with infants, safe oils are lavender, chamomile and rose. Use a ratio of one to two drops per ounce of carrier oil.

For topical use with children ages one through twelve, safe oils are lavender, chamomile, rose, neroli, orange and tea tree. Use a ratio of two to four drops per ounce of carrier oil.

Other oils may not be safe for use with young children. Please consult with a certified aromatherapist if you are interested in using other oils besides the ones mentioned above. One special caution: Never use eucalyptus or peppermint on infants.

Using aromatherapy during pregnancy: It’s best to avoid using essential oils during the first trimester of pregnancy. The body is very sensitive at that stage, sometimes in unpredictable ways. Besides, many women find any strong smell unpleasant during this time.

Oils that are safe to use during the second and third trimesters are cardamom, chamomile, frankincense, geranium, ginger, neroli, patchouli, petitgrain, rosewood, rose, and sandalwood.

After the baby is born, you may carefully re-include other oils, but be patient. Keep in mind that our senses of smell and taste are closely linked, so that even a scent on the air could cause a baby to sense something “off” about breastmilk or formula. Great caution must be used with topical application with infants. Neonatal skin does not mature until 3 months of age, so for beginning essential oils users, it would be best to wait to use oils topically until baby is at least 3 months old.

Avoid the following oils during any stage of pregnancy: aniseed, basil, birch, camphor, cinnamon, hyssop, mugwort, parsley seed and leaf, pennyroyal, sage, tansy, tarragon, thuja, wintergreen, and wormwood.

Using oils with people who have other conditions or sensitivities:
Special care should be taken using essential oils with people or pets who have serious health issues, including asthma, epilepsy, seizure disorders, high blood pressure, or certain mental disorders. If these conditions are present, or if you have any question about using oils with an individual experiencing any kind of health challenge, consult your physician.

Essential oils are a complementary therapy to be used in conjunction with regular medical care. Aromatherapy does not replace proper medical care. When in doubt, always seek the advice of your doctor.

Root Chakra Aromatherapy Recipe

January 2017 Root Chakra Reading
By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA
Mind, Soul, and Self LLC

New Year, new you, new plans, new resolutions! As someone who specializes in the Chakras, I believe they are the perfect blueprint for human growth and development.  The Chakras are the foundation of my entire business. I offer Chakra Wellness Retreats, Chakra Boot Camps, Chakra Intuitive Readings, Chakra Balancing, Chakra Aromatherapy, Chakra Products, Chakra Classes, Chakra Certification, and now Chakra Forecasts! Starting in 2017, I will write up one chakra a month, give an aromatherapy recipe to help bring balance to that Chakra, and give a forecast about what the Chakra energies hold for that month. Don’t worry, there are more than 7 chakras and enough information for the entire year! If you want to dive deeper into the Chakra themes of each month, I have a new Chakra Mini Series of 60-minute monthly chakra classes that includes a 30-minute chakra hypnosis session. I am also available for individual Chakra Intuitive Readings. So in January 2017, we will begin with our foundation, the Root Chakra.

Brief Overview of Chakras: The Chakras are the main energy centers in our subtle body. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura or electromagnetic field. There are 8 main Chakras, minor, subpersonal, and transpersonal chakras.

The Root Chakra: The Root Chakra is the most physical and instinctual of all the chakras. It is located at the base of the spine/tailbone/genital area. Its themes include grounding, survival and basic needs, home, work, car, finances, career, food, nutrition, shelter, physical health, manifestation, trust, survival, security, and the right to be here. It is your foundation. It represents the element earth. This chakra brings health, prosperity, abundance, success, security, and dynamic presence. Lessons: right to be here, right to have, security, survival.

January 2017 Root Chakra Forecast: I have found through my work that many people, especially those on the spiritual path, struggle with the right to have, success, abundance and manifestation (functions of the Root Chakra). Why is this? Why do you believe you are not worthy? What is holding you back? Since the new year is traditionally a time to lay the groundwork for the upcoming year and make goals, collectively in our group consciousness, the energy is strong right now for manifestation work. If you have an idea, project, or a personal goal, focus your energy and awareness. Now is the time for you to set a solid plan of action to make this become a reality. Focus on what you desire, not what you fear.

Root Chakra Aromatherapy Recipe

  • 1 drop Patchouli
  • 2 drops Cedarwood
  • 1 drop Vetiver

Put drops on a cotton pad or tissue. Breathe in and state the following affirmation: “I am abundant and successful and deserve good things in my life.” Repeat as needed.

Frankincense

By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA

December is filled with celebrations of religion and spirituality. In nature, it is a sacred time as wildlife slumbers, sleeps, and hibernates; preparing for rebirth in the spring. The Winter Solstice is this month and symbolizes the return of light. Winter is traditionally a time of self-reflection and deep inner work. This is the most magical time of the year. So of course, Frankincense, one of the most revered sacred and spiritual oils is our intuitive essential oil for this month. Frankincense (Bosweilla ssp.) is a resin formed when an incision is made into the tree. The tree oozes a liquid gum that is hardened and then distilled into an essential oil. Frankincense originates from Somalia, Ethiopia, India, and Arabia. Like many essential oils that originate from resins, Frankincense is helpful for respiratory and skin concerns (bronchitis, congestion, scars, wrinkle, dry skin). Frankincense is also sedating, relaxing, and is great for anxiety, stress, sleeping problems, and nervousness. It can help quiet the mind and assist in meditation and contemplation. It can assist in communicating and connecting with the divine and higher realms. Frankincense resonates with the Crown Chakra and helps heals related spiritual and existential concerns. It can raise your vibration and cleanse negative, low vibrating energy from your aura. Overall it is a fantastic oil for holistic healing with many mind/body/spirit uses. A great oil for every healing toolbox.

My Frankincense Forecast for December 2016: At the Winter Solstice, we call out with our innermost being for the return of the light and we honor its impending return. This Solstice I know we all are feeling a great need for the light to come back, not just with the sun returning this year, but also for humanity in general. 2016 has perhaps been the toughest year in recent times for many on a collective level. The Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, is honored by many traditions as a sacred and rich time. The longest night is a fruitful time for setting intentions, to be birthed with the newborn Sun. What you dream of and set intent for now can grow with the Sun, and gain momentum in Spring. The dark before the dawn, just like new Moons, can be a powerful moment of magic, drawing in what you’d like to see happen in the New Year. Take some time in contemplation and meditation to clearly visualize what you want. Then release it to the universe to be manifested. And remember, it is always darkest before the light returns. Have hope and faith. Things will get better.

Holy Winter Solstice/Yule Aromatherapy Recipe

  •         3 drops Frankincense
  •         3 drops Myrrh
  •         3 drops Palo Santo
  •         5 drops Sandalwood
  •         6 drops Cedarwood

Add to 2 ounces of water to make a mist/spray. Feel free to add any water safe gemstones or crystals to the bottle if they call out to you. This will then be a Gemstone Aromatherapy Blend. Great for clearing energy and setting sacred space for meditations, ritual, and celebrations.

Blessings for a wonderful holiday season and new year. Love and Light~

November Aromatherapy Recipe: Cinnamon

Written by Mimosa
Comments: Leave a Comment

By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA

As the calendar changes to November, Mother Nature becomes quiet, sleeps, and rests for the next several months. The wheel of light becomes dark. This is a time of inner work and self-reflection. This is a time to celebrate death and prepare for rebirth. We also officially begin the holiday season. There are dozens of holidays celebrated globally from November 1 to January 1, including Dia De Los Muertos, All Souls Day, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Yule, Christmas, and Kwanzaa.  Spicy aromas like ginger, nutmeg, and clove are strongly associated with autumn and the holidays. The intuitive essential oil for the month of November is the spiciest of them all, Cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.). There are several species of Cinnamomum distilled to make essential oils including Cinnamomum verum, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Cinnamom ceylanicum, andCinnamomum cassia (known as Cassia).  The leaves and bark can both be used. Cinnamon is a very hot oil and it is generally not recommended that you use this oil topically (especially Cinnamon Bark) as it is very irritating to the skin. Cinnamon is great in the diffuser, especially when people are more prone to getting sick in the fall and winter. Cinnamon is a powerful immune booster, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral agent.  But, my favorite way to use cinnamon is as a psychic protector. Cinnamon is one of the best tools for your energy toolbox. Traditionally witches’ brooms were made of cinnamon and the brooms were symbolically used to sweep the hearth and remove any negative energies from the space. Cinnamon is a suburb energy shield and energy protector. Even though cinnamon essential oil is delightful, I often prefer to use the actual herb.  I have put cinnamon sticks in the corners of rooms to raise the vibration, made cinnamon wands to cleanse space, and made charm bags for protection with cinnamon sticks, star anise, fennel seeds, and rosemary leaves. The more aware you become of energy, the more you understand how important energy protection and cleansing are to your daily routine.

My Cinnamon Forecast for November: Though many look forward to the holiday season, it is important to remember that others do not. Not everyone has family or a lot of loved ones and not everyone gets along with their family. This is a stressful time for some as an emphasis is put on buying gifts and overexerting yourself financially. Cinnamon reminds you to create and enforce strong boundaries, both physical, emotional, and energetic, with yourself and others during this season. It’s ok to say no to others. It’s ok to limit your time with some people because they drain you dry. You don’t have to empty your bank account and buy expensive gifts to show others you love them. Please be extra loving and compassionate to yourself during this time. And if you feel drawn to it, light a candle with the intent to send love and positive intent to those who may need a little extra blessing this season.

Recipe for Psychic Protection

  •         3 drops Cinnamon
  •         2 drops Anise
  •         2 drops Fennel
  •         3 drops Sage
  •         4 drops Frankincense
  •         6 drops Lavender

Mix the above oils in a 2-ounce spray bottle, add one tablespoon or vodka or witch hazel (to help mix the water/oil and disperse the spray) and then fill the remainder of the bottle with purified water. Use the spray to cleanse energy and protect your space and aura.  Be careful not to spray the eyes, skin, or breathe in the mist.

October Aromatherapy Recipe: Elemi

by Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA

As we move into October, when the sun is transiting through the constellation Libra (represented by scales), we start to see a shift into more balance. It’s been a turbulent year for many people but the winds are changing and it is starting to slowly calm down. So it’s appropriate that the intuitive essential oil for the month of October is Elemi (Canarium luzonicum). Elemi essential oil is distilled from the resin of this tropical tree. The aroma is unique and pleasant; a combination of citrus, dill, balsam, and grass. Like many resins (Frankincense, Myrrh), Elemi is useful for respiratory conditions, skin care, and releasing deep emotional pain. Energetically, Elemi balances all the chakras and our entire energy system, including the chakras above our physical body (Transpersonal) and below our physical body (Subpersonal). Elemi means “as above, so below” in Arabic. It has a unique yin/yang quality, helping to bring wholeness, integration, and completion. When we experience trauma and stress, our energy system gets off balance. Elemi can be extremely useful to restore harmony, peace, and uplift the spirit.

My Elemi Forecast for October: We are starting to see a shift in our lives to a more quiet, peaceful calm. The universe is slowly restoring balance in many areas of our lives, particularly in regards to job/career and interpersonal/relationships. This is a good time of the year to evaluate what you are ready to release, purge, and set free. I highly recommend that you do some sort of cleansing ritual, such as a fire ceremony, to release the hurts of the past and energy that doesn’t serve you a higher purpose/greater good anymore. This will help bring you into balance as you release the old to invite in the new.

Recipe for Balance

  • 5 drops Elemi
  • 3 drops Geranium
  • 7 drops Bergamot

Use in a diffuser, make an aroma inhaler, blend in one ounce of a vegetable oil and use for anointing your chakras, or add to one ounce of water to make a mist or spray.

Aromatherapy Recipe for September 2016: Cypress

By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA
> Click here to check out Christina’s new online Aromatherapy class.<

Now is a time of great transition. September 1st unofficially marked the end of summer as children in this area went back to school. The Autumn Equinox is this month and the leaves will start changing color and fall. It is also currently Mercury Retrograde, and September 1st was the new moon and a partial solar eclipse. All these astrological events symbolize new beginnings and movement towards a greater clarity in your life. This has personally been a very rough summer for me and my family with unexpected deaths and big changes. I am looking forward to the changing of the season with hope and positivity. I think we all could use some sunshine and blessings right now. So it is very fitting that the intuitive essential oil for the month of September is Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens). To me, Cypress overwhelming symbolizes transition. As a tree, Cypress also symbolizes strength, especially in healing deep, painful inner wounds. It reminds you that you are stronger than you think you are. Do not doubt yourself. This oil is here for you to comfort and support you in times of change, whatever your change may be; death, loss of a relationship, new job, new home. Cypress whispers to us, “this too, will pass.” Emotionally, Cypress is calming and assists in grief and loss. Physically, Cypress is beneficial for circulation, cellulite, for balancing skin, helps regulate menstruation, and for asthma and coughs. Spiritually and energetically, Cypress reminds me of the Footprints in the Sand poem:

“One night I had a dream… I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and Across the sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; One belonged to me, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of my life flashed before us, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life This really bothered me, and I questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you would walk with me all the way; But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why in times when I needed you the most, you should leave me. The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child. I love you, and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

Let Cypress carry you in your darkest and lowest times. It will not leave you in your time of need.

My Cypress Forecast for September 2016: Are you a mental time traveler? Do you travel to the past in your memories and thoughts and ruminate over things that happened and wonder what you would have and could have done differently? Do you torment yourself by playing things out in your mind over and over again? Are you full of grief, guilt, and despair? The past is passed. Sometimes we need to let it be otherwise it will kill us emotionally and drain us dry. Everything is a life lesson if we choose to learn from it. Everything happens for a reason. Thank the universe for the lessons. Thank loved ones now gone for sharing their life with you and that you will see them again one day. Try to move forward with strength and hope. If you find yourself visiting the past in sadness, you can bring yourself back into the here and now, back into your body with your breath. Breathe in deep, and count your breath in and out. Be here, be still, be present, be in the now. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” ~Dr. Seuss

A blend for grief and loss

  • 7 drops Cypress
  • 5 drops Myrrh
  • 4 drops Rosewood (or Ho wood)
  • 2 drops Rose

For use in a diffuser. You can also dilute in one ounce of a carrier oil (like coconut oil or jojoba) and apply topically to your heart chakra area. Repeat the following affirmation as you breathe in the aroma: “Heal my heart, heal my soul, bring me peace.” Namaste.

kali

This blend is dedicated to my loved one, Kali. Rest in peace baby girl.

Aroma Reading for August 2016: Galbanum

Written by Mimosa
Comments: Leave a Comment

By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA

The intuitive essential oil for the month of August is Galbanum (Ferula galbaniflua). Galbanum has a unique fresh, earthy, green smell that definitely reminds me of summertime. It is an herb in the parsley and carrot family that has a long history of use as an incense and sacred plant since ancient times. It is believed the Egyptians used the resin for embalming.  To obtain the essential oil, incisions are made in the stalk of the plant and a gum seeps out. The gum is hardened and forms a resin which is then steam distilled. Like other resins, Galbanum has skin healing, anti-inflammatory, and respiratory healing properties. I find it particularly useful for emotional, spiritual, and energetic healing. It can be used to assist in meditation, purification, grounding, and centering. Inhale the oil and pair it with affirmations and personal growth work to heal deep emotional wounds.  I focus on using it in integration. Integration is pulling all your energies together; your heart, emotions, soul, energy, physical body, etc and uniting all parts of you, making you whole and complete…all the pieces of the puzzle are put back together again. Great for when you feel scattered and pulled apart. I like to anoint the feet at the end of an energy healing session to integrate my clients and combine it with grounding and centering techniques.

My Galbanum forecast for August 2016: Are you having troubles with concentrating? Do you feel confused and pulled in a million different directions right now? Are you having troubles making a decision? Are you at a crossroads in your life? Do you feel scattered? Galbanum is encouraging you to slow down, take a deep breath, and quiet the mind. Do not try so hard. Relax. Go with the flow. Do not try to control your situation. By letting go of the need to control, you will find your answer. Take some time to meditation and sit in silence. The universe is giving you your answer, you just need to listen and pay attention.

Spiritual Powerhouse Blend

  • 3 drops Galbanum
  • 3 drops Frankincense
  • 3 drops Palo Santo
  • 3 drops Tulsi (Holy Basil)
  • 3 drops Elemi
  • 5 drops Lavender

Use in a diffuser, blend in one ounce of a vegetable oil and use for anointing, or add to one ounce of water to make a mist or spray.

(Special note: Although Mimosa carries quite a few essential oils, Galbadum is not one we stock. Christina recommends these sources: Nature’s Gift Stillpoint and  Mountain Rose Herbs.)

Aromatherapy Recipe for July: Geranium

Posted on
Category: Aromatherapy Recipes

By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA

The intuitive essential oil for the month of July is Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens). Geranium has very feminine energy and is nurturing and comforting. It is cooling, sedating, relaxing, balancing, and is fabulous for anxiety, stress, nervousness, and tension.  I associate it with the Solar Plexus Chakra as it may regulate the adrenal glands and clear excess heat. I feel it is empowering, boosts confidence and self-esteem, and resonates with Solar Plexus themes and functions. It can be used to alleviate PMS and menopausal symptoms and regulate the reproductive system, making it a must have women’s oil. It can also be used as an insect repellant during this hot summer month.

My Geranium forecast for July 2016: The message I have received from the universe loud and clear for this month is to connect to goddess energy and the divine feminine. Regardless if you are male or female, focus on self-care and nurturing yourself this month, whether it is getting a massage, reading a good book, taking a day off of work, or allowing yourself to sleep in. Spend some time with your mother or grandmother if you are lucky enough to still have them in your life. Take a walk in nature and revel in the beauty of Mother Earth. Connect to the moon in the sky at night and infuse that energy into your aura and energy field. For the females: meet up with your girlfriends for coffee or cocktails or focus on rekindling old female friendships or creating new ones. Wrap the goddess energy around you this month and let it embrace you.
