Days of the week with their correspondences

Posted on
Category: Magical Tools & Ideas

The days of the week were originally named for the sun, the moon, and the five known planets.  These planets were associated with particular gods depending upon the culture.  For example, the Greeks, the Romans, and Germanic peoples each had their own gods associated with the different days of the week.

To invoke the energy of the planets or deities listed below, wear or carry one of the listed stones on the corresponding day of the week.  Wearing crystal jewelry (or keeping a stone in your pocket) in this way is also considered a talisman of good luck and protection.

These stones can also help you ease into your day and more easily work through whatever the day may bring.  To go deeper into the day’s energy vibration, try meditating with your chosen stone on your third eye chakra, create a crystal grid, or place the stone in a prominent position on your altar or in your sacred space.

Another interesting way to use these stones is to find out what day of the week you were born on and use the corresponding stone as a personal talisman.  For example, I was born on a Friday, Freya’s Day.  There’s something fascinating that happens when we are born into this world…and the cosmos imprints that energy onto our spirit from the exact moment we are born.  If you embrace that energy and tap into the strength it can give you, you can create and do amazing things.

So, if I wanted to strengthen my understanding of the archetypal energy of love and beauty, enhance my connection to Venus (or Aphrodite or Freya), or utilize the positive aspects of the planet Venus, I would carry or wear an Emerald, Copper, Chrysoprase, Rose Quartz, or Pink Tourmaline at all times as a personal talisman.  Wearing and carrying these stones as personal talismans will strengthen the positive attributes of this archetype and balance its negative attributes.

creating your own oracle deck

Posted on
Category: Tarot & Oracle

I am a self-proclaimed oracle card junkie. I can spot a new deck in a heartbeat – and when we get something I’m unfamiliar with in the store, I can’t wait to check it out. I’ve collected many decks throughout the years, and I have many “favorites.” The thing I’ve discovered, though, is that I am never completely satisfied – I always want more. You could say that this is because I’m “addicted” to cards, or maybe just that I’m bored with what I already have. The truth is, though, that I’ve never resonated so much with a deck that I felt like it was “the one.” Perhaps I didn’t connect with all of the images in a particular deck. After all, there are always a couple of cards in each deck that I don’t particularly love. Or maybe the accompanying guidebook didn’t seem all that interesting. Whatever the reason was that kept me from truly connecting with each of my decks, it always felt like a let-down. This inspired me to start creating my own oracle cards, and this is something I’ve become very passionate about.

Why take the time to create your own oracle or tarot deck? I mean, it sounds kind of arduous if you really stop to think about it. Well first of all, when you make your own cards, you know that it is a one-of-a-kind deal. There is not another one like it out there, and that alone makes it pretty special. In addition, creating your own cards allows you to tailor it specifically to meet your own needs and desires. If you don’t like something you’ve created, you have the power to eliminate it! Another reason to make your own cards is because creativity can be very therapeutic. The process itself is often healing in some way, whether you realize it at the time or not. When you decide to create a personal deck, the possibilities are endless. Nothing is too weird, and if you can dream it – there’s always a way to bring it life in a deck! Last but certainly not least, creating oracle cards can lead to business opportunities. If you create something amazing, chances are someone else might want in on it as well. It’s something that can be marketed and sold if that’s something you choose to explore at some point.

As I mentioned before, I have a long history of collecting and working with many different oracle and tarot card decks. It wasn’t until I started drawing some whimsical drawings in in the pages of my journal that I realized an oracle deck was coming to life right before my very eyes. I am by no means a Picasso. Far from it actually. Much of my artwork is asymmetrical and goofy, but mine is that way by accident – not on purpose – and hey, I’m okay with that. Art is therapeutic for me. It’s an outlet in which my emotions inspire and fuel my creative side, and I enjoy it. My first oracle deck didn’t happen overnight. While working on my first set of cards, my mom was diagnosed with cancer and became quite ill very quickly. I put my deck aside during that time, and didn’t pick it up until years later. After my mom died, I honestly kind of forgot about my cards. I was very busy caring for my small children, and I was very depressed because I was so lonely for my mom. One day I found the journal of cards I had started, and I was instantly inspired to get back to work on them. I worked on them as often as I could because I was determined to get them done and start using them. I decided to call my first oracle deck The Watchful Eye Oracle.  I was so proud and excited when I finished it. I wrote a companion booklet to go with my cards, self-published my deck, and had them professionally printed with boxes and all.

Not long after completing The Watchful Eye Oracle, I got to work on my second set of oracle cards entitled Bright In-sight. This particular deck of hand-painted cards was quite different than my first deck. Not only was the style of artwork different, but the intended use was different as well. These cards were designed to be used more as a meditation tool or a pick-me-up. I created them especially for those that struggle with depression, mood disorders, or anyone experiencing negativity or hardships (so just about everyone on the planet). Again the process was very healing for me. I enjoyed working on the cards and couldn’t wait to get them out there for other people to work with, too.

I’m currently working on two more oracle decks: Mood Mani-acts and a Day of the Dead Angels deck. My artwork is vastly differently from deck to deck, and I feel this makes each one even more unique. I don’t want to be a one-trick pony, if you know what I mean.

Anyone can create their own oracle cards. Whatever your artistic skill level is it really doesn’t matter. You can do this if you want to. Need some suggestions to get you started? Here are some ideas:

  • Sketch your ideas on index cards and fill them in with some high-quality colored pencils (you’ll want to use some decent pencils if you go this route).
  • Paint your oracle using acrylic or watercolor paints. You can do this on any paper you like. If the images are painted on larger paper or in a journal, you can always scan them in later and print them out to get the size you’d prefer.
  • Use gel pens to “Zendoodle” or “Zentangle” card designs.
  • Make collaged cards using photographs and interesting papers.
  • Laminate your cards to make them more durable.
  • Purchase a blank set of cards that already have “backs” to them (we sell these at Mimosa).

If you’re unable to find that perfect deck as I was, I strongly encourage you to try and make your own. Enjoy the process and be kind to yourself while you do it. You’ll find that many of the imperfections you initially struggle with were intended to be there all along. A handcrafted deck is very meaningful and that will make for some pretty insightful readings, if you ask me!

~ Here’s the blank card deck we carry: Blank Cards
~ If you’re new to Zentangle, find out more here: Zentangle website
~ And here are some Zentangle books we carry at Mimosa: Zentangle books
(We don’t currently have the Watchful Eye deck up on the website, because it’s been out of stock for a while, but we just got more decks in the store. We’ll add it to the website sometime in the next few days.)

The sun is in Gemini. What does that mean for your sign?

Category: Current Transits

May 21 – June 20

Having established a stability of survival, comfort, security and values in the sign of Taurus, now, in Gemini, our soul prompts us to explore the world around us, taking in the plethora of information available to us through our senses. Our logical, rational mind, as represented by Mercury, exists to process all that data, making sense of it, seeing connections, forming ideas and testing our perceptions by communicating with those around us. In our journey toward spiritual consciousness in human form, Gemini is our ego’s first stretch outside itself to discover it’s way back to soul awareness. Making sense of this physical world and the relationships and dualities within it is an endless source of mental fascination and delight. However, until we balance this with a deeper intention toward wisdom, our Gemini curiosity can devolve into merely a shallow and hubristic extension of our ego’s limited awareness and ignorance of soul.

Look below for your birth sign (sun sign) to see what particular challenges/opportunities are being brought to your awareness this month. (These can also hold true if you have your Moon, Rising sign or a number of planets in the sign.)

Aries: Aries, this month you may feel an upsurge in your ability and desire to explore, initiate and communicate ideas. You just may have some brilliant inspirations, but pay attention to how fast you are talking, and if your mind is scattered. This is a clue to whether you will actually follow through with your enthusiasm. Pause to question, be curious and listen. Your mind may feel in a hurry, but your soul may want you to learn more before acting.

Taurus: Ideas and communications are not what you typically value most, Taurus, especially if they don’t promise some practical outcome. During Gemini, however, you may value your intellect and an ability to more quickly think and talk. If you apply your practicality to how you communicate, your usual concern about “easier said than done” will be alleviated. So let yourself brainstorm a bit with others. No one can force their ideas on you, so no need to be stubborn. New ideas are not your enemy. They are pathways back to your soul.

Gemini: This is your time of year, Gemini, so let your curiosity loose. Just try to apply some degree of focus so you don’t scatter your attention and energy too far wide and feel drained and confused. If you were listening to your body last month in Taurus, you should have some ideas about what priorities you have for learning, sharing, and/or teaching and with whom. So use this time to follow through by using your gifts of mental awareness and communication to make the appropriate connections and plans. Take actions so it all doesn’t just remain in your head. Your decisions will lead you to the growthful experiences that your soul wants for you.

Cancer: Cancer, though you are typically abundant with feelings and emotions, it’s not always easy for you to communicate them to others. Emotions are information from our soul that need translating for our egos to understand. During this Gemini month, you may find that you are more easily able to connect your feelings to thoughts and words. This can bring you more clarity within, and it empowers you to share your heart with others. Likewise, you can improve your ability to listen to others’ feelings and express your empathy and compassion in effective ways. Don’t take it personally.

Leo: The Gemini qualities of words and wit offer you, Leo, an opportunity to shine your talents through writing, speaking, and acting. Even if not applied to a formal artistic endeavor, give your voice permission to open up and be heard. Your soul’s intention in Leo is to teach you that you are a unique and blessed expression of the divine one. So, trust your heart and passion to bring through your voice a ray of love to the world. Expect feedback, and listen, but don’t let it stop you. Not all have ears to hear you.

Virgo: Virgo, your usual devotion to creating order through lists, routines and schedules may be challenged this month. The Gemini influence has your mind wandering with curiosity, so embrace it. Daily life may feel scattered with multiple tasks and projects, and this is not your comfort zone, but if you apply your talent for precision and clarity to how you communicate with others, you just might find some new and interesting possibilities to explore in your life. Listen to others for how your compassion can serve in a practical way.

Libra: If you are in a relationship, Libra, your partner better be ready for a more than usual amount of talking. Your need for communication with a significant other is high during this month. So find someone close. Your gift for seeing many sides of an issue will be supported by a higher degree of mental agility and communication skills to bring about balance and fairness. This could be a good time to resolve issues with any antagonists in your life. Your soul is longing for experiences of intimacy and that requires communication.

Scorpio: Scorpio, this month’s Gemini influence will heighten your curiosity about the secret, intimate and emotional aspects of life. It won’t be enough to just quietly observe those around you. You may feel an urge to probe their minds and uncover their feelings. When done from soulful consciousness, this can deepen intimacy for you and another, perhaps even improving your sexual life. Be careful not to let curiosity drift into manipulation. Words are powerful. Use them wisely.

Sagittarius: OK, Sag, now is the time to take those deep and meaningful understandings you have been gaining and give them your own words. Write, teach, speak. You have wisdom to share in ways that only your soul can do. You are here to inspire others. The key is being curious about how those cosmic concepts apply to the “here and now” reality around you. The insights you gained last month in Taurus should help. If nothing else, travel and learn a new language.

Capricorn: This is the time for you to communicate your vision and plans, Capricorn. You may feel drawn in too many directions, but if you focus on communications, you will lay the groundwork for action to come. People will recognize your intellect at this time. Be curious about who can help you and why. Your soul is directing your mind and your tongue to the people and opportunities for manifesting your dream. Stay flexible.

Aquarius: During this Gemini influence, Aquarius, your mind is flooded with many exciting and unpredictable ideas. That’s what you normally do, anyway, but now it’s especially important that you surround yourself with your tribe, your team, your kindred souls. Through collective brainstorming, you can trust your comrades to help sort out and prioritize all those unusual and intuitive ideas. There is divine method in this madness. Just keep it flowing.

Pisces: Pisces, your deeply sensitive nature typically causes you to stay a bit shy and withdrawn, unable to find words that capture the other-worldly awarenesses that flow through you. During this Gemini month, you may find better access to thoughts and language that allows you to share with others. Let Gemini help your mind discern the dimensions of your inner world, give definition to it, and express it into the world through writing, poetry, music, chanting, and the like. You bring the energy of wholeness (Pisces) to the mind’s illusive dualities (Gemini).

aromatherapy and the higher heart chakra

The Chakras are an ideal roadmap for personal growth and development. In 2017 we are journeying through the Chakras and focusing on one Chakra a month. May brings us to the Higher Heart Chakra, the ‘Healers Chakra’ and the center of charity, volunteerism, humanitarianism. This month, the Higher Heart asks you, “How are you a light in the darkness so that others can find their way?”

Brief Overview of Chakras: The Chakras are the main energy centers in our subtle body. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura or electromagnetic field. There are main Chakras, minor, subpersonal, and transpersonal Chakras. The Chakras’ function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. Each chakra is associated with certain physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual interactions. Each chakra has personal growth themes, functions, and purposes. The concept of the Chakras has been around for thousands of years.

The Higher Heart Chakra is a newer emerging chakra. Not a traditional “yoga” chakra. It is located between the Heart and Throat chakras on the Thymus. This energy center was gifted to us at the beginning of time, but lie dormant until recently. It is here to help us integrate and process the new energies coming to the earth. It is activated in those who have reincarnated at this to help heal humanity and help us move into the Age of Aquarius, the 5th dimension, a time of peace and harmony. Not many people teach about this Chakra. I feel as if part of my life mission is to share that there are many more than just 7 chakras! The Chakra and energy system has been evolving as humans and the energies on earth have been changing. We are waking up and becoming multidimensional! I consider the Higher Heart a main Chakra. It reflects a person’s understanding, acceptance and practice of the universal concepts of Universal Love and Compassion. Activated in Healers, as it shows a person’s ability and/or calling to healing/teaching work. Its functions’ include unconditional love for all of humanity, healing the world around you, increasing the vibration of humanity, practicing the lessons of the heart, serving, donating, volunteering, giving back to your community in some way, generosity, altruism, and humanitarian work. Those with an activated Higher Heart feel that they are here for some greater purpose and that they can influence the world by their actions.

May 2017 Higher Heart Chakra Forecast: Its very appropriate that the Higher Heart is the Chakra of focus for May. I have been pondering lately why people volunteer. Currently, I am involved in more volunteer and charity projects than I ever have been in my life. In fact, I am volunteering almost as much as I am working for pay. Some of the volunteer projects I am involved in were quite difficult to get accepted for and are considered “prestigious”. So, I have been thinking about why people volunteer and donate their money and time? So I did a little research and talked to others heavily involved in charity work. People report volunteering because 1) causes are close to their heart, 2) to make a positive change in their community, 3) to make the world a better place, 4) to build up their resumes, 5) to learn a new skill, 6) For the unique opportunity and benefits/perks, 7) because they feel called to, 8) To pay it forward, 9) For self-reflection and self-awareness, and 10) To boost their mental, physical, and spiritual health. Serving your community is a function of the Higher Heart. Many people have only the chakras below the heart activated and therefore their whole life-experience is based in the consciousness of ego, fear, and survival. The Heart and Higher Heart Chakras are leading to a consciousness based in love and community and therefore to a life in abundance, peace, joy, and satisfaction. By volunteering and donating you can help shift your consciousness to a higher level. As you heal and raise your vibration you help heal all of humanity and raise both the vibration and consciousness on the planet. So this month, the higher energies are asking you to explore how you serve humanity. If you currently don’t volunteer, donate your time or money, or do some sort of service/humanitarianism, WHY NOT?? Most people think when we talk about “healing” humanity we are referring to setting up a healing business like yoga, massage, Reiki, etc. We can heal the world in a lot of different ways. The world and humanity need a lot of help right now. How can you assist?

Higher Heart Chakra Blend:
~ 6 drops Rosewood (or Ho Wood)
~ 2 drops Thyme
~ 2 drops Tea Tree
~ 2 drops Hyssop
~ 1 ounce of a vegetable oil like coconut, jojoba, or almond

Blend the essential oils into the vegetable oil then massage some over the Higher Heart area. Lightly thump the Higher Heart area three times and repeat the following affirmations: “I am experiencing a higher calling now. I help heal humanity now. I help heal the world now.”

chrysaberyl / alexandrite for shapeshifters

If you picture-google chrysoberyl, you’ll see it has quite a wide variety of appearance, from transparent golden gemstone, to greenish cat’s-eye, to a garnet-like red. The less expensive variety, though not exactly gemmy, is a very pretty blue. This mineral  was only identified a couple hundred years ago. But because the form of chrysoberyl known as Alexandrite has the amazing property of changing color in different lighting, it has already developed quite a reputation. Soon after its discovery, magician Eliphas Levy recommended it for strengthening blood vessels, and other blood-related healing purposes. Chrysoberyl has a strong association with the planet Mercury, connecting it to shapeshifting and bringing messages.

Click here for a link to a video showing the color change in the Alexandrite variety of chrysoberyl.

Metaphysical properties: Use at the 6th Chakra (3rd Eye/Brow Chakra) to enhance luck, to bring peace and calming when anxious or nervous, to banish jealousy, to balance the body, mind, and spirit, to stabilize the nervous system, and to regulate the glandular system.

Other names: Chameleon Stone, Diaphanite

golden topaz for inner light

Golden topaz was one of the first crystals discovered and used by mankind, prized for its connection with the sun. It’s also known as the “Sunday Gemstone,” both because its color associates it with the sun, and because this spiritual stone is traditionally valued for lifting curses. Its oldest known use is for turning away the evil eye, and ever since it has been associated with just about anything eye-related. Saint Hildegarde went so far as to claim that a piece of topaz taken into a dark chapel would give off so much light, you could even read a prayer book by it. She also recommended a crystal elixir of sorts for eye ailments: topaz soaked in wine and applied to the eyelids, with the leftover wine used as an eyewash over the next few days. And topaz was said to have another odd power: when placed in anything poisonous, it would become invisible. (This sounds a bit unlikely, so we don’t really recommend it… For that matter, we’re kinda dubious about the wine thing too.) Nowadays, people still see topaz as a stone of light that can surround us with a golden and spiritual glow. This sunny crystal is useful for mental irregularities such as insomnia and nightmares, as well as matters of positive spiritual development.

Properties: Use at the 3rd Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra) and at the 7th Chakra (Crown Chakra) to bring the divine light of spirit into the body, to neutralize cancerous cells within the body, to open the crown chakra, to enhance meditation, to aid in forgiving oneself as well as others, and to relieve symptoms of upset stomach, digestive pain or discomfort, or gastric upset.

Other names: Imperial Golden Topaz, Golden Imperial Topaz

One way to use this stone: Golden topaz is an excellent stone to wear in jewelry, since it can improve both your energy level and your mood.

iolite for direction

Iolite is sometimes called “water sapphire,” but that’s a little misleading, since it isn’t really a type of sapphire at all. It’s actually the gemstone variety of cordierite.

Lore: Iolite is known as the “viking’s compass,” because it can be used to determine the position of the sun on a cloudy day. It has an optical property called pleochroism, meaning the stone takes on a completely different color depending the direction of whatever light is illuminating it. Even on a cloudy day, light always comes from the actual direction of the sun. So the sailor could find the sun’s position by positioning the stone at various angles until the right color appeared, and by knowing where the sun was, he could figure out his own position and direction. On a viking ship, the crystal would be set within a marked frame to help the navigator interpret this information.

Metaphysical properties: Use at the 5th Chakra (Throat Chakra) or 6th Chakra (3rd Eye/Brow Chakra) to aid in direction and guidance (physical and spiritual), to instill hope, to promote feelings of peace, calming, and tranquility, to aid in communication with one’s inner-self, as a companion stone for journeying activities, and to heal the body, mind, and spirit.

One way to use this stone: If you have an important choice to make, you can use iolite for divination. Write each of your options on a piece of paper, then hold the iolite crystal over each one in turn. The intensity of the crystal’s color can give you guidance in making a choice.

larimar for peace and joy

Larimar is a beautiful blue stone known for enhancing communication, whether with people, animals or even elemental spirits. It has a joyful yet peaceful energy.

Lore: Some stones have worldwide histories rooted in centuries of folklore, but larimar’s history is local and recent — in fact, it’s only been found in one place in the Dominican Republic. This beautiful blue stone seems to have the ocean written on it, like a reflection of the clear Caribbean waters of its origin, and all of its associations are with water. Dominican natives called it blue stone, and believed it was a gift from the sea. It was rediscovered by a Peace Corps volunteer and a Dominican man, who gave larimar its name — a combination of his daughter’s name, Larissa (which can itself mean “gull”), and the Spanish word mar, meaning ocean. The only mining area is a steep hill with a Swiss cheesed with deep, narrow mine shafts that can only be worked by hand. There’s no way of knowing how long the deposit will last.

Other Names: Dolphin Stone, Blue Pectolite, or Atlantis Stone

Properties: Use at the 5th Chakra (Throat Chakra) for promoting peace and calming, to stimulate emotional healing, to connect one with Goddess energy, and to promote communication with one’s spirit guides and totem animals.

One way to use this stone: To enhance communication with spirit guides, elementals or other beings, try meditating while holding a piece of larimar. You could even try holding it against your head, just behind your ear, to better hear what your guides have to tell you.

amazonite for inner peace

Amazonite has been around a long time. The ancient Egyptians used it to make scarabs, and parts of the Egyptian Book of the Dead are carved in amazonite. Some even claim the female warriors known as Amazons used it (though no one seems to know exactly what they used it for.)

More recently, amazonite has been connected to the higher heart, or zeal point chakra. This chakra is associated with finding a sense of inner peace and maintaining your wellbeing. A well-functioning higher heart chakra can help you maintain inner balance, even in times of stress.

Metaphysical properties: Use at the 4th Chakra (Heart Chakra) or at the 5th Chakra (Throat Chakra) for blocking electromagnetic energy, to encourage truthfulness, for balancing the mind, body, and spirit, for soothing and comfort after trauma, to manifest the love of the universe, to facilitate a connection with nature, for balancing the chakras, to overcome fears, to stimulate positive communication, to benefit bone health, and to relax muscles.

Other names: Also known as Amazon Stone, Amazonstone, Mother of Emerald, Colorado Jade, Amazon Jade, or as Blue-Green Microcline

One way to use this stone: If you’ve having a stressful day, try taking a break for some breathing meditation while holding a piece of tumbled amazonite near your higher heart chakra — right around your collarbone. Focus on your breathing while the stone pulls stress and negativity away from your body.

shungite the super mineral

Shungite is a black, glassy mineral from the Karelia region of Russia that is composed of about 98% carbon, formed from the remains of algae that lived two billion years ago. The exciting thing about this is that some of this carbon comes in the form of fullerenes (aka “Buckyballs”), similar in shape to a soccer ball, which have shown promise as a cornucopia of potential health benefits. Buckyballs appear to have antimicrobial properties, and possibly target such health risks as free radicals and cancer cells. They’re also useful as a purifying agent, especially of water. These recent findings line up nicely with the traditions surrounding shungite. In the Russian village of Shun’ga for which the mineral is named, people have long used shungite for purification, especially of water. For this reason, Peter the Great set up Russia’s first spa in Karelia to make use of this super mineral. And now modern scientists are investigating Buckyballs for exactly those properties! This is a fascinating case where modern science supports the traditional properties associated with a crystal.

Metaphysical properties: Use at the 3rd Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra), 6th Chakra (3rd Eye/Brow Chakra), or at the 7th Chakra (Crown Chakra) to facilitate Astral Travel; to aid one in feeling a connection with all beings; to promote feelings of universal oneness; to create a protective shield around the energy body to defend one against EMFs or psychic attack; to help bring a light to dark times in one’s life; to help regulate the temperature of the body; to energize body, mind, and spirit; to transmute negative energy into positive energy; and to reduce pain and inflammation.
