How to Get the Most out of a Psychic Reading

– Come into the reading with a positive attitude. Even if you’re facing difficult times, the purpose of the reading is to help you find clarity to move beyond the difficulty.

– A good reader will give you guidance that will help you use your own free will to improve your life. The reading is not about “fate,” it’s about possibilities.

– It’s perfectly fine to come into a reading without a specific question. Often the best readings come when we’re simply open to whatever Spirit wants to tell us.

– Keep an open mind. It doesn’t matter if you’re skeptical about psychic readings, as long as you come in without prejudging or demanding “proof.” Just be prepared — you may get more out of the reading than you ever dreamed!

– Be prepared to hear the answer you need, even if it’s not necessarily the answer you hoped for. You can be confident that this information comes to you for your highest good.

– There’s no hard and fast rule about how often to get a reading. For some people once a month is right, while for other people it’s more like once a year. Let your instinct be your guide.

– Generally, it’s best to avoid coming to the same reader with the same question over and over again. Sometimes people do this because they secretly hope “this time the answer will be different.” An honest reader will never give a different answer just because it’s what the client wants to hear. However, if something has truly changed — especially if you’ve made positive steps to take control of the situation — this may be the perfect time to come in for a follow-up reading.

– There’s also no rule about whether it’s better to see one reader or many. It’s kind of like seeing a doctor: Often it’s best to stick with one doctor who knows you well, but at other times you may need a second opinion or a specialist.

– Different readers have different specialties. One reader may have a special interest in animal communication, another may specialize in past lives, another may have lots of experience with dream interpretation. If you have a specific need like this, Mimosa’s staff will be happy to make a recommendation.

– Sometimes a message you receive won’t make sense right away because something has come through to the reader about your future. If you’re confused about why you received a message, write it down and hold onto it. If a message about your future came through to the reader, chances are it’s important.

– One of the best things about getting a reading is that it can help you learn to use your own intuition. A good reader is always happy to help you learn to use your own skills in your everyday life.

Interview with Clairvoyant Medium Brenda Hammon

Mimosa is truly blessed to have Brenda Hammon as one of our regular readers. Brenda is a clairvoyant medium, delivering gentle but direct messages from guiding spirits for the benefit of her clients. In addition to working through Mimosa, she’s also been a favorite medium at other storefront locations and at the Wonewoc Spirit Camp, and regularly presents psychic gallery group readings and other events. Even with those impressive credentials, in person she’s down-to-earth, playful, and really fun to be around!

When you were growing up, did you ever feel you had unusual abilities?

When I was growing up I never really felt like anything I saw or heard was anything unusual because it had always been there. I remember believing in UFOs and all things magical, and always just knowing that these things were real. When I was little I could always read the energy of the adults around me, and many times I heard what they were going to say before they said it. I just always thought everybody could hear and see things. As a child I would have very prophetic dreams also, which at times was a bit scary.

You have some mad skill with manifesting, and even won a new car recently. What’s your secret?

Manifesting is fun-Thank you for the compliment! I have been using the power of faith. Not hope, which to me feels ‘graspy’ but FAITH-feeling and knowing that I am being led to my desires and that I can manifest anything and everything that I desire. I believe that our desires are heaven-sent and it is the Universe’s way of moving us forward in our lives. I use creative visualization and “I am” messages to keep myself grounded. It is so important to just let yourself be in the flow of source energy and have faith the Universe is leading you. Trust and have faith. I trust every day that the Universe is sending all those to me that I can be of service to, and I have faith in my ability to give them spirit’s messages.

How is a psychic gallery different from work with an individual client?

In a psychic gallery a reader must sort out all the different energy in the room and be able to identify who the message is for. Sometimes in a group, messages can also be meant for more than one person. Spirit is wonderful that way as they will place people in the gallery together for the benefit and healing of all involved. Gallery readings can be a lot of fun, and spirit loves laughter and community also! I would always advise that you come to a gallery reading with an open heart and mind and be prepared to heal and grow together as a group. Although I would get very private messages for you, if it is something that would embarrass you I would not give specifics. Very private messages are best for individual readings. In an individual reading, you will receive messages the entire time meant specifically for you-from your guides, guardians, Angels and loved ones. You have the chance throughout or at the end to ask questions and get clarification.

Does being sensitive to other people’s energy ever create difficulties?

Being sensitive to other people’s energy is hardest for me in a close relationship-as you can sense when words and spirit do not match. It can be quite difficult to know that person is lying (of course, as a mom of four this has come in handy more than once!). I also have problems in large stores where there is so much energy from other people that is connected to worry or finances. I try to go to the grocery store at off hours, or make my trips brief.

Tell us a little bit about your day job working with developmentally disabled adults.

For the last four years I have run a recreation program for adults with developmental disabilities-it is one of the best jobs in the whole world (besides doing readings of course). I get to take people bowling, to sporting events, to camps and every month we hold a dance where you will find us doing the YMCA, the hokey-pokey, and the chicken dance :). It is a rewarding job and I am grateful to be in a position where I can dedicate my time to helping others have fun and get involved in their community.

Do you ever receive personal messages from loved ones on the other side?

I can channel messages through writing for myself and I can get messages in that manner from my loved ones, Angels, guides and spirit. I can hear messages for myself at times also-when I truly listen. I feel the most connected outside, walking in nature, so I try to get outside for a walk as often as possible. I like to talk out loud to spirit as I walk, and I keep myself grounded, connected and grateful through this practice.

Is it harder to read a stranger, or someone you’ve known for a long time?

I don’t really find that there is a difference giving a reading to a stranger or friend as long as you are stepping out and just letting spirit take over. The hardest people to read are the ones who are determined not to be read, and tell you ‘no’ when the answer is really ‘yes’. I just bless those individuals and give them the messages I am receiving for them, regardless of response, because I truly have learned to trust exactly what messages are coming through for my clients.I know that some part of them is absorbing the message and when the time is right they will actually ‘hear’ it. No judgement at all, we are all at a different point on our paths.

How do you experience automatic writing?

I cannot really find words to explain automatic writing. It just happens. I journal in the morning and ask for guidance. I have to read it back after I am done, as I don’t always remember exactly what came through. During a reading I write down guidance I receive through hearing or seeing, and then as I write other messages come through-it is a magical experience. I think it is part of what makes my readings so very helpful and beneficial-as it is such pure guidance.

Do you feel you’re basically a visual person? If so, how does this relate to your clairvoyant skills?

As an artist, I am a very visual person, and I can easily see things for my clients. I use this in my readings, as I am shown a lot of information, but I use hearing, feeling and knowing also. They all hold hands together to deliver the best messages. I will be shown things and I ask “why?”, “why is this important? and I am shown or told the answer.

What do you do to keep your inner fairy princess happy?

I love this question-it makes me smile!! I don’t think about having an inner fairy princess but I love the image. I walk, I spend time with my children, family and friends. I head to the water as often as possible, my favorite local trail runs along the river. I take art classes and love all art supplies. I love pink and collect items with hand painted pink roses. Paper, markers and stationary make me very happy. I have been known to binge watch both Project Runway and Deadliest Catch. I love to travel and see new places. I also require alone time to truly be balanced and happy-reading, bubble baths and a hot cup of tea are my go-to’s to relieve stress.

Please come and see me at Mimosa! Readings are my all-time favorite thing to do in this world. I am blessed and honored to have these gifts and enjoy being of service to my clients.

Ground, Center & Shield: Tools for an Elder Apprentice

Ground, Center and Shield as Magical Tools

I came to the study of magic late, as I started two weeks after my 60th birthday, and thus I take up some tools that are entirely new to me, while I am given new names or new purposes for others tools that I have wielded for many years. “Ground, Center, and Shield”: that precise combination of words was new. But I had studied Aikido, where the rubric “Relax Completely, Weight Underside, Keep One Point, Extend Ki” was a guide to both that martial art and to how to move through daily life with strength and peace. Zen meditation seemed to have similar concepts with its emphasis on Hara, that is the Tan Tien at center of my body as the key to developing an imperturbable dynamic centering of my mind and body. However, when I began to Ground, Center and Shield, regardless of the similarities with practices from other paths I have walked, I was doing these three basic preparatory acts as bits of magic that prepared me to practice further magic. When I allowed “Ground, Center and Shield” to become magical tools to enlarge and protect my daily life, the very fact that I was using these magical tools as part of my mundane life sets an intent that my entire life is to be experienced as a magical act.

Why do I Ground, Center and Shield?

For me what is unique to magic is that it is a conscious and reciprocal dialog between myself in ‘all my parts’ and the innumerable conscious beings who inhabit our multilayered and multifaceted Universe. When I perform magic, the goal is not simply changing my own consciousness; I am asking the participation of other personalities — asking members of a conscious universe to respond and to take action, that is to change themselves at my request and bidding. Yet these beings, even the seeming simplest and benign, have a personality. They have their own agency and will, their own desires, and their own agendas. They may have needs, flaws and weakness that I am not aware of; they are not human, and I do not yet speak their native languages.

Additionally the magical relationship is reciprocal, and those I contact are free to respond or not. They may have significantly more power than me, and there is no reason to assume, especially on a first meeting, that their response will be helpful, truthful, or friendly. They are fully entitled and capable of asking that I change in response to our interaction. Their ways of asking could be gentle, beautiful, affirming or safe, or they could be ferocious, terrifying, completely inscrutable or dangerous. I will be the only one who can decide if their request is in my interest, appropriate to accept, or if it is not. I may be asked questions of incredible value, or offered life-changing opportunities, but the offer may be made or the question asked only once and never again. Furthermore, I cannot enter the magical world using my mundane thoughts and feelings. Unless I can listen fully, see clearly and feel intensely I will simply miss what I came for, be unable to accomplish my magical goal, and be unable to bring back any treasures into my own world.

Given that I am entering into a foreign, enticing and exciting, yet possibly dangerous place, I had better start any magic as well prepared as possible. I need to have a strong foundation; I need to know in my body, mind and heart why I am entering these realms; I need to know my boundaries, what and where they are. And I want to have all this while being alert, flexible and accepting of coming wonders, joy, and love to be found in meeting and working with the enumerable conscious others who inhabit our worlds. For me Ground, Center and Shield is the necessary preparatory magic that allows all this to happen.

What do these three magical acts accomplish?

Ground – I develop connection with the Earth as the foundation of my being and source of limitless Mana. Grounding allows me connect with the Earth, as she becomes my dynamically flexible and firm foundation. At the same time I can release my thoughts, fears, and even my hopes into her infinite depths thus clearing me for the magic to come. The Earth’s ground of infinite potential cradles me in her strength and stability.

Center – Being firmly and flexibly rooted in the womb of the ground, I can open myself to the conscious energies that surround me. In that awareness I concentrate them to focus my awareness of myself. I understand why I am about to enter on the action at hand. There is so much Mana, no limit to it, and as I concentrate it in my center I begin to convert that potential into will and prepare to mobilize for action and witness, able to receive and give, from a place of quiet and calm alertness.

Shield – From the feeling of self-knowledge contracted in my center, I expand and reach out my consciousness so that I am able to be aware and to meet the Others’ consciousness. Sensing and setting the boundaries of my body and consciousness in the magical realm I can meet the Other with confidence. I can speak and move with power, and I can listen and receive while alert, open, and safe.

How do I Ground, Center, and Shield?

Here are the basic techniques I use in my practices. The rituals emerged from my teacher’s guidance, instruction from books especially Hawai’ian Mysticism and T. Thorn Coyle’s Evolutionary Witchcraft, and my own intuition.

I prefer to do my magical work standing so these suggestions are described as being performed while standing up. They can also be done while sitting:

Ground – Stand with your feet shoulder width apart in a relaxed but upright posture, arms held in any position that is comfortable. Your legs become strong roots growing into the earth. Feel them growing through the soil, into bedrock. Feel these roots extending down through the Earth’s many layers. Your roots reach the Earth’s center, her core furnace of infinite energy and power, a churning spectrum of all colors. Feel the Earth’s power become yours as fiery sap rises and enters your legs and energizes your entire body with a comfortable but powerful glow, starting in your legs, then flowing to hips, torso arms and head.

The Earth will gladly accept any fears, tensions, doubts or worries, what ever it is that you need to release. She has so much Mana and willingly takes that which you release as a your gift to her. The flow, both upward and downwards, between your body and the Earth core becomes a cycle and it is complete. Your strong foundation comes from the Earth’s core of infinite Mana – Stand with strength, stability, flexibility, power, and love.

Center – Just above your head you see, and feel a golden globe of energy. It is about the size of a softball or small melon. It is bright, it might feel warm, or perhaps not, but the brightness is strong and comfortable as is your sense of that sphere’s power. Begin to slowly lower the sphere of light, down the back of your skull and down your spine. As you lower the Globe, it passes behind each Chakra and it energizes each one, the Eye of Your True Vision, the Throat of Your True Speech, The Heart of Your Beauty, The Core of Your True Will, passing The Center of Your True Strength just below your navel,  you bring the  Gold Sphere to rest in nest of your pelvis just above The Root of Your Being. Let the Sphere rest. Perhaps you tighten the muscles of your pelvic floor just a bit to let the Globe rest in its perfect place with its glow and warmth in your center.

Shield – Let the Gold Sphere expand. Feel it grow, as fast or a slow as you need it to. As the Globe grows; its energy surrounds your body. How big does the Sphere need to be? A few feet around or as large as the solar system? What do you need? What color is it now? What color do you need it to be?

In your Sphere you are able to receive and give freely. You are safe. Your awareness is wide and relaxed; eyes soft, ears relaxed, nose open, body alert but soft, you know your will see what you need to need to see, hear what you need hear, smell what  you need to smell, and feel what you need to feel without any strain or false focus.

You are ready.

Ground, Center and Shield

As more people awaken to their psychic gifts and have more experiences of what we call a paranormal nature, there is a great desire for education on how these gifts develop and manifest. There are many theories on why this awakening is occurring, from the astrology of these times to the practices of meditation, mindfulness and yoga. Some people are simply born especially talented in several of the various forms of these gifts, and have always been. It is also a part of our human, animal and divine natures. Everyone has experienced some form of what is unexplained awareness and knowing, or at least knows someone who has. I believe it is becoming more common for a variety of reason, yet it is also becoming more acceptable to share and talk about these experiences. Those who have been especially gifted are in all cultures of the world, past and present. These people are no more rare than those who have a natural gift for music or math, athletics or fine art.

In any case, all gifts need to be nurtured, practiced and protected. Repression of a natural gift is a waste of talent. However, some gifts can be curses if they are cursed by people in a society. Psychic gifts in particular can cause anxiety, confusion and heartache when the people who have them to any extent are not trained to develop them properly and to protect themselves physically, ethically and from unintended misuse. For example, a person who is very empathic and feels other people’s feelings is often a person others go to for understanding, support and confirmation of their own feelings. This can be very draining for people with these gifts and they need training in having good emotional boundaries to protect themselves.

People who see, dream or know of natural disasters, illness in another person or a tragedy to come in the future not only doubt their own sanity from time to time, but actually feel as if they could or should have done something to stop what is way beyond their control. Precognition is not the same as having responsibility any more than knowing who is calling you on the phone out of the blue made someone call you.

Grounding is the art and science of discernment. It is connecting to the earth and our own bodies in knowing what is a true psychic or paranormal experience and what is fantasy, worry, anxiety or something else. We practice grounding exercises to be fully present, strong, clear in our hearts, minds and bodies. It strengthens our connection to the earth and natural visible universe. It helps create sacred space wherever we are and protects us from being drained physically, emotionally and energetically. Grounding is especially good for our bodies.

Centering has more to do with being in touch and aligning with our authentic selves. In this case, selves is plural, as humans are multi-faceted. We are made up of many parts, and the total is more than the the sum of our parts. Many times our bodies want one thing, our hearts another and our mind may argue with both. Alignment of the parts of ourselves helps us to know ourselves and to focus, getting different needs met and acting in accord with our deepest spirit. We can do centering exercises to come to accord within ourselves and to honor the different parts of ourselves, as well as the whole. Centering helps us to know and act upon our true will.

Shielding involves the actions we take to keep out negative thoughts and energies — feelings and opinions that are not truly ours. This may include cleansing ourselves of mental or emotional baggage we carry unaware. It gives us the quiet we need to recharge, renew and learn to block or filter toxic thinking, negative emotions or to process and transform these thought forms and feelings that are helpful to us or anyone else. There are times we need or want to be open, and times to rest, hibernate and unplug from external influences that distress us. Shielding protects us from being (or feeling) vulnerable and honors our need to rest and renew.

Anyone can develop and benefit from these three skills, whether they think they are psychic or not. For anyone, they are great for basic stress relief. For those who know they are psychic, and have experienced stronger reactions that can come from being to open to too much energy for too long, these tools are a welcome gift and need to be part of a regular spiritual practice.
