About
At Mimosa, our mission is to help you connect to your spirituality. With a collection of spiritual tools ranging from healing crystals and essential oils, to tarot and oracle cards, incense and candles, books, and more, we help you embrace the mystery and excitement of discovering your soul path. Mimosa also supports healing arts and the exploration of intuitive abilities while embracing the global diversity of wisdom and belief.
Mimosa is the official shop of the Love & Light School, both of which are owned by Ashley Leavy. We love serving both our local community, an dour online community of students from across the globe!
A Brief Mimosa History
Mimosa opened its doors in May of 1984. The original owner, the late Patty Roth, had a vision of a community bookstore focused on the emerging alternatives in social thinking and beliefs. She also used the space for community programs. It was a very exciting time, and Madison owes Patty its deepest gratitude for her 17 years of dedicated work to establish Mimosa as a key resource store for alternative choices.
In July of 2001, Patty sold the business to Beth Wortzel and Jim Powell. In January of 2003, Beth and Jim moved Mimosa from Henry Street to West Gilman Street, just off the corner of State Street.
Then, in September of 2004, Beth and Jim formed a business partnership with longtime Madison residents Diane and Gary Doughman. With this partnership the store continued to develop, putting a greater range of products on the shelves and finding new ways to reach out to the community.
In June of 2006, Diane and Gary bought Beth and Jim’s shares of the business, and have continued expanding the store and its offerings. In January of 2009, Ashley and Zach Leavy purchased a portion of Mimosa, and for several years co-owned the store with Diane and Gary. After the Doughmans retired at the end of 2014, Ashley and Zach took over full responsibility for the store.
In May of 2018, the decision was made to move to a new, temporary location, 440 State Street, and carrying even more of a variety of products – including plants, spa items, and more gifts for family and friends.
In January of 2020, Mimosa moved to its new permanent location at 409 State Street, a location with more space, a small room for events, and lots more metaphysical treasures! In this space we have been able to expand our selection of books and card decks, we've added 2 large cases for jewelry, and we even have an antique apothecary cabinet filled with herbs and everything you need for spells and rituals. Yet another new chapter in Mimosa's history is being written daily!
Mimosa owes a great deal of gratitude to all of its various owners, past and present, who have each left their mark on this ever-evolving resource center.
